Diversity Minor - 6 Classes / 18 Credit Hours

Streamlined Requirements:

DST 463 - SEMINAR IN DIVERSITY STUDIES, 3 CREDIT HOURS
This is an integrative seminar intended to help students achieve an ability to deal with complex problems relating to the diversity of American society. The course is intended to help students integrate the knowledge they have acquired from their elective courses; conceptual issues will be of great importance. The seminar will culminate in a research paper or other appropriate project. The seminar, which may be team taught, will deal with selected topics chosen by the professors offering the course.

SOC 201D - SOCIAL PROBLEMS, 4 CREDIT HOURS
We face many challenges in society today. This course addresses selected social problems and issues in our world today. Emphasis is on conceptions and misconceptions regarding the causes of social problems at the national and international level. Possible solutions and policy implications to these problems are also explored. Working collaboratively with the Community Outreach Office at Baldwin Wallace University, students enrolled in this course may choose to work in various social agencies to address social problems in the greater Cleveland area.

PHL 271D - PHILOSOPHY OF SEXUALITY, 3-4 CREDIT HOURS
This course introduces students to a range of issues related to sexuality, with a particular focus on the relevance of gender to sexuality in the West. We will investigate issues such as sexual orientation, transsexuality, marriage and fidelity, pornography and prostitution, and sexual violence. Warning: this course contains some graphic materials, students must be 18 years old.

SOC 302I - RACIAL AND CULTURAL MINORITIES, 3 CREDIT HOURS Prerequisite(s): SOC 100D or SOC 201D
Increase your understanding of cultural conflict. Many Americans do not realize that most nations in the world have minority populations. We will use macro concepts (social structure) and micro analysis (interpersonal relations) to examine the position of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and major religious minorities in the U.S. in contrast with conditions of groups in several other countries, including South Africa, Northern Ireland, Brazil, and Canada. Learn a little world geography as a side benefit!

PSY 245D - MULTICULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY, 3-4 CREDIT HOURS
Multicultural psychology is the study of race and ethnic diversity and its impact on the field of psychology. This course will address the issue of multiculturalism as it relates to the history of psychology, research, testing and counseling specific to racial and ethnic groups in America. Students will gain an understanding of the role of culture on society as well as the therapeutic process.

CAS 285D - INTRODUCTION TO INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION, 3 CREDIT HOURS Prerequisite(s): CAS 126
This course will analyze difficulties in communicating across cultural boundaries, misunderstandings arising from cultural differences, and techniques for living and working successfully in a multicultural setting. The course utilizes films, simulation games and other experiential learning techniques. Appropriate for any student interested in being a genuine citizen of the world.

Studying things like racism as a minor may be like the 4H club or the Girl Scouts.

I saw they had a kind of Arts Management major but then realized I would do Music Industry.

College

So, I may major in German but not ready for Music.  Since I'm not, I was thinking of getting ready.  They have a Diversity minor and an Arts Management minor.

I was thinking of Sociology as a major, but I found many are into counseling or something maybe, the way nursing is a popular choice and advertised field of need, where you feel wanted and depended on.

It's like you think I'm doing Music just for the fun of it- which is what I did in grade school.  It is something people do naturally, like watching TV.  The Diversity is fun, and the Arts Management means I can do something like Music Education except for any age and type.  I am into the racism part of diversity a lot and the general prejudices that creep in and out of things.

What about music?

College seems encouraging in nursing, counseling ... what about music?

Re: People from the US - Was your youth kinda worthless?

Like, first it's my parents treating me more like an experiment and not like I'm a daughter.

Then, there's all the trashy, surprisingly racist adults who think it's a big whoop they can tell I have great awareness because I was raised as a racial outcast.

Go to birthday parties and sit there and watch the mothers have a hissy fit. It's nothing special. Those kids are trashy, and they know it - because they are too dumb to talk to me but still talk to each other.

Go to school and never learn to use reading as a learning tool rather than as reading just for the sake of reading but not enough.

Leave home and not have security going to college because of how hard it is and how you can be kicked out for no reason whatsoever. Other people have rich parents and quit before they can get kicked out, and no one may even notice them anyway.

Go on MySpace and Facebook and IMDb, and no one says much to you there.

Forget to start a blog until it's too late and people are set in their ways and no one wants to communicate with you, which looks suspicious to others you want to talk to, so that they won't trust you just starting fresh socially.

Wait for 15 years, and the world passes you by; people you love may be getting old, retiring, and die; and you get called old or middle-aged before you hit 35.

Americans will betray you in the end, causing some sort of hiatus.

You can't trust people.

Band Instruments

Professional orchestral musicians who played in a band instrument seem most talented.

They dedicated time from school for this.  They were an active part of their school.  It's very stable.

Cheating

Think of all the fun people had because they played an orchestral musical instrument in high school, but I was in church choir and that leads to no man's land.

Logical Outcomes of Personality

People think people such as Ellen DeGeneres are ready for people and does what makes sense.

I say I am like that except I had bad schools where I stayed up late doing busywork and put up with bad kids interrupting class all the time in some/many cases and some points.

Sorta think about it, how it's not a contest where I win and it's unfair, and you'll realize even if you are lazy or unlucky you're not bad.

Missing High School - "Don't we all?"

Remember when we were pre-teens/teenagers and everyone acted like high school was everything?  It seems to have subsided as others of my generation have "left the nest," so-to-speak.

Maybe, we all think we connect on Facebook, but I don't have any of them as real friends.  That lessens the attraction for posts and friend requests from others.  Most of my Facebook friends are from Africa, I think, and are Black, some maybe Spanish or some kind of Near Eastern or Indian.

College

I just ordered transcripts from 4 colleges to be sent to a new one I hopefully can attend, in the Cleveland, Ohio area on Lake Erie.
